The 20 or so years leading up to the U.S. Civil War caused much unrest and hard feelings between the North and the South. When you are working on this type of research it is so very valuable to create your own Civil War Timeline to be able to keep track of the events and actions.
South Seceeds:
Commencing with January of 1861 when the south seceded and through the early part of 1861 when the south formed a new government and then seized Fort Sumter, you will be able to follow all of these events through original period newspapers that are all available on line.
President Lincoln Inaugurated:
President Abraham Lincoln was inaugurated on March 4, and then he alerted the State of South Carolina that Federal troops would be attacking Fort Sumter to regain Federal rights. Soon four more states joined the Confederacy and then West Virginia was born as the majority of the residents in that part of the State of Virginia did not desire to be secessionists.
Nation Torn Apart:
You will be able to follow all of these events through the full Civil War Timeline using contemporary news accounts, just the same as the people that were living during that time received them. You will gain first hand knowledge of things that were not brought forward to the present day history books and you will start to understand better as to how this country could be so torn apart.
War Proceeds:
July of 1861 was a critical point in the early part of the war with the First Battle of Bull Run. You may read more about that event by reading our previous post on this subject:
