You will be able to do a search of the newspaper online computer index and locate such things as birth announcements, engagement and marriage announcements, and death records or obituaries.

Each one of these clues that you find in the papers will have more than one piece of data on them that will lead you to other resources to check and verify. Soon you will be off visiting old cemeteries and recording gravestone inscriptions and looking for church records, land records, estate records, and many more documents that you will become well acquainted with.
